Sakuyahime
A kindly and elegant lady-in-waiting of the Imperial Court in the Heian Period. Hailing from a family of accomplished yet eccentric literati, she was well-versed both in the dignified Classics and the more salacious love poems. After the death of her husband, this young widow shifted her interest to painting, in search of “a magnificent and imperishable scenery”.
Maruko & Gotou
Two wanderers from the future taking the form of fluffy, walking, talking maneki-neko and inu-hariko respectively. Their little mishap while operating the time machine has transported Sakuyahime and Iwanaga into a landscape most disconcerting and unfamiliar: a Japanese cultural festival in the 21th century.
Iwanaga Sanshi
A brilliant yet reticent novelist whose popularity peaked between the tail end of the Meiji Era to the middle of Taisho Era. Having grown up sickly, he preferred to use a pen-name in place of his given name, deeming the latter unlucky. Originally a member of the literary coterie “Kanro”, a gathering of young writers, he’d been muddling along waiting for death after the group’s disbandment.
